London-based uTalk, a company whose focus is on language learning, run the UK's only language competition for primary aged children, the Junior Language Challenge. The competition takes place over eight months, with those who progress to the final learning three new languages over that period. In 2016, the grand final was held at London Olympia on October 14th, as part of the annual Language Show. Children were registered either by their school or by their parents, and the small entry fee was donated to onebillion, a charity that creates basic maths and literacy apps for children in developing countries.
My brief was to document the day as it unfolded: the various rounds, the last minute practice sessions in the corridor, the interviews with teachers, parents and children, the lunch break, the informal adults' competition and the presentation of prizes.
